Guilford Art League April Newsletter

Carry-in Supper
Finally—after a three-year hiatus because of the pandemic!—we will resume our annual carry-in supper in May. Gallery One will be having their show in the Guilford Art Center Gallery then and are happy for us to have our dinner while their exhibit is up. We are thinking May 18 would be a suitable date. Make a note in your calendar; details to follow. Please plan on attending this important meeting—we will be discussing the future of the art league!

Member Show
Our first member show of 2023 at the Guilford Free Library was a great success and well received. We had an excellent turnout for the opening reception on March 7. Brooke Sheldon won the “Viewers’ Choice Award” for her painting Sound Dreaming (above). Congratulations, Brooke!

2nd Member Show
A reminder that we will exhibit our second member show in the Scranton Library in Madison in July. We will send details at a later date, including an optional theme,

Community Center Shows
We had our first ever opening reception at the Guilford Community Center for our winter show on February 3. We met several new exhibiting members, enjoyed an abundance of food, and strolled the downstairs hallway and the upstairs Menunkatuck Room to view all the artwork.

The winter exhibit will come down on April 14 and the new spring show will be installed then. We are limited to 45–50 pieces, so each artist can bring 1–2 pieces. This is really an excellent opportunity to show your work in a highly visible setting so we do encourage you to take advantage of it. We will send out an invitation shortly.

New Exhibit Opportunities
We have some interesting invitations to show our members’ works in local medical offices.

The office at 699 Boston Post Road is currently hosting works by Molly MacDonald. We don’t have an exact schedule for the exhibits yet, but if you are interested, contact Sheila Kaczmarek at sheila.f.kaczmarek@gmail.com or 203.645.8827 for details.

The Valentine H. Zahn Community Gallery at Middlesex Health has also invited us to exhibit members’ work at their impressive gallery space in Westbrook. This show will be installed at the end of May and remain there until August 25. We will send out an invitation with details shortly; if you are interested in having your work in this show, let us know.

Finally, the Optical Shop @ Shoreline Eye here in Guilford has also asked us to exhibit in their waiting room. As soon as we have more info about this opportunity, we will let you know.

Expo
GAL artists will again have the opportunity to exhibit their work on the Guilford Green July 14–16 during the Guilford Art Center’s Craft EXPO. Many thanks to Jodi Marra once again for organizing this. This is a wonderful opportunity to show your work during the huge New England arts and crafts exposition, which is visited by thousands of people every summer.

Juried Show
Our annual juried show will be September at the gallery at the Guilford Art Center. As usual, we expect a large number of visitors to this exhibition of excellent art in a wonderful gallery space. The Guilford Festival of the Arts will hold its annual celebration during our show and asked if they could hold some of their performances in the gallery while our exhibit is up (probably Monday, Sept. 18). We think this would be an excellent arrangement.

Richard Cretella Scholarship
You may remember during last year’s juried show that long-time GAL member Richard Cretella died. Both he and his late wife had been active members of the art league for many years. Their daughter Steffen is also a member. The Guilford Art League was the recipient of many donations made in memory of Richard, and Steffen and her sister have organized a scholarship in their father’s name, which they will present at the high school awards ceremony in May to a Guilford High School senior who will pursue a career in fine art.
