Come to the Guilford Art League’s 79th Annual Art Exhibit on the Guilford Green, Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18, from 10 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday, July 19, from 11 AM to 5 PM. Patrons of fine art return year after year to stroll the tree-lined paths where they can view and purchase paintings, sculptures, and photographs from members of the GAL. Visit the Guilford Art Center Craft Expo, held the same weekend, then round out your day exploring the delightful shops and restaurants that surround the Green.
This year 24 GAL artists will be showing their work: Alison Brush, Jeffrey Capone, Pam Carlson, Eileen Clark, David DelBiendo, Carole Dubiell, Ruth Dwyer, Bob Ferraro, Katherine Fountain, Arthur Guagliumi, Steven LeRoux, Brendan Loughlin, Marjan, Rosemary McClain, Molly McDonald, Lisa Miceli, Windy Noviardy, Lou Paffumi, Howard Park, Chris Penry, Annette Pompano, Carlos Rios, Elizabeth Steele, and Mark Weaver. Plus, watch for demonstrations by Pam Carlson (pastels) and Chris Penry (handmade paper).
The Guilford Art League was formed in 1947 by area artists to create a community to support and share their avocation. They had their first shows of art on the Green with paintings hanging off a snow fence while artists sat on folding chairs at card tables. When local craft persons asked to show and sell their wares alongside the artist, it was clear they needed their own organization. This became the Guilford Handcraft Center, renamed the Guilford Art Center. Today, the GAL’s Annual Art Exhibit on the Green is held concurrently with the Guilford Art Center’s Craft Expo, which features over 175 craft people from all over the US.
Many members of the art league are full-time professional artists, while others create their work part-time, while being employed in professions that often closely relate to their natural gift of artistry. In addition to the annual summer exhibit on the Green, the GAL hosts shows throughout the year at several locations, including the Guilford Community Center and the Guilford Free Library. Their annual Juried Art Show will be held in September at the Guilford Art Center, and they often host special events like a carry-in supper for artists and ekphrastic poetry readings. The GAL also provides one scholarship annually to a Guilford High School senior who is pursuing a career in the arts.
The Annual Art Exhibit on the Guilford Green is free and takes place on the north end of the Guilford Green. (Use 122 Broad Street, Guilford CT in your GPS system). Parking for a fee is available on the west side of the Green at St. George’s Church, and free parking is available in other locations.
