Member Show
Our annual member show was held during March at the Guilford Library. The optional theme, which inspired many of the entries, was “Chasing the Light.” Seven paintings sold! Congratulations to the artists! The evening reception on March 6 was well attended. We also collaborated with the Guilford Poets Guild in a poetry reading on March 17, an event we haven’t held in several years. In these ekphrastic poems the poets offered their interpretations of several of our artworks, creating a rich interplay between the “meanings” of the paintings and the poems.
Guilford Community Center
The winter exhibit at the Guilford Community Center has also been a great success. We held our second ever opening reception at the community center February 6, a gala attended not only by GAL artists but also by a number of young poets from Adams Middle School who wrote about our paintings. Their writing was inspired and inspiring, and both artists and poets were keen to discuss each other’s work. GAL was honored to have many of the students’ families and teachers join us at the reception. The poems were posted next to the appropriate work of art. Many thanks to GAL member and poet Ed Lent, who helped organize the students’ trip to the community center to view the artwork and invited them to our reception.
Drop off for the upcoming spring show as well as pick up for the current show is April 12, 11:30–noon. The spring show will then be on exhibit until mid-July.
Message from Ed Lent, our Instagram and Facebook Connection
Spring is the season of renewal and new growth, so what could be a better tribute to that than bringing new members to the Guilford Art League?
We are having a call for artists, specifically, asking existing members to invite new members to join us. This April we are asking all members to invite a friend or associate who is an artist of any age, ability, medium, or style to join GAL.
April is our Invite a Friend “Members for Members” membership drive.
ITS EASY! Go to our GAL website, click on Membership, click on Become a Member, then click on Membership Application. Print it, fill it out, and mail it in with your check (still only $30 a year).
Also, stay in touch. Know what’s going on by following us:

Seeking Exhibitors
Since last fall GAL has been exhibiting members’ work in the waiting room of the Shoreline Eye Associates in Guilford. Staff, patients, and artists have all enjoyed these exhibits, and one painting has sold. Ann Langdon currently has about 15 works there through May. We are looking for GAL members to show 12–20 paintings in this venue for two-month periods. If you would like to participate, please contact Denise Casey at dencasey@comcast.net or 203-815-2999.
Looking Ahead…
Annual Carry-in Supper
Mark your calendars for our annual carry-in supper at the gallery of the Guilford Art Center on May 23. Last year’s supper brought us all together for the first time since the beginning of Covid for some serious eating and socializing. Like last year, the gallery will be showing works by Gallery One, a diverse group of Connecticut artists which we will be able to enjoy.
Outdoor Show on the Guilford Green
League members will once again be showing on the Guilford green on July 12–14. We will send out application forms and information to all GAL members in May. This 3-day event offers members the opportunity to set up tents to exhibit and sell their work during the same weekend as the Guilford Art Center’s Craft EXPO, which draws thousands of visitors.
Annual Juried Show
Our juried show is coming up in September with receiving on Saturday, September 7. We are looking to expand our base of support for prizes this year, so we would be really grateful for any suggestions from members who may know local businesses willing to contribute a prize and be acknowledged in the program. Also, if there are any members who would like to underwrite a particular prize in honor of or in memory of someone, that would be welcome.
