The Guilford Art League presents its 75th Annual Juried Exhibit & Sale on view at The Gallery at Guilford Art Center from Monday, September 11 – Saturday, September 30. An Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, September 14, 5-7 pm.
Juried by Jeanne Criscola, the colorful and eclectic show features more than 100 Connecticut artists working in all media including oils, watercolor, pastels, acrylics, sculpture, collage, mixed media, printmaking, and photography. (See a complete list of accepted works below.)
This year, First Prize ($600) went to Helen Cantrell for Winter Sunset, Second Prize ($400) was awarded to Sharon Morgio for Uneasy Guest, and Third Prize ($300) went to Cheri Weymann for her work Evergreen Walk II. The Sculpture Prize went to Sandra Spahr for Lion Cub and the Photography Prize was awarded to Peggy Bloomer for Kayaks In Fog. The Elizabeth (Mike) Boyd Memorial Prize went to Karen Wiesner for Summer Marsh – Meig’s Point, and the Richard Cretell Memoria Prize went to Ralph Levesque for Confluence. Honorable Mentions included Gritli Rabin for Your Choice: Light over Darkness, Ralph Acosta for Evening Ferries at Martha’s Vineyard, and Arthur Guagliumi for The Printblock Blues.
“I think the work was extraordinary and wonderful,” said Criscola. “I feel humbled to be choosing the show and I wanted to be as inclusive as possible. If an artist submitted two pieces of work I compared the two carefully and took out one of the pictures, I then went through all the work again, looking at composition, framing and presentation. Then finally I looked at colors, concepts and imagery and whether all would talk to each other – whether they would work together to support each other and whether the show as a whole would work together. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing such varied, competent and exciting work — thank you.”
Many of the pieces in the show are for sale. A complete list of items can be found in the show program, available at the gallery. Those interested in purchasing art may speak with a gallery sitter or contact Sheila Kaczmarek 203.645.8827, sheila.f.kaczmarek@gmail
